The M1 Rat Rod — Skylar Lamb

The Project

During my time spent in World Studies as a freshman, I was able to discover stories that would soon become my favorites of all time. I am referring to such pieces as The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Odyssey, and Beowulf. Studying these stories and using what we’d examined in the classroom to learn about the cultures they came from that pushed me to pursue a career in Anthropology. Naturally, I have wondered what it would be like to create my own story which includes “read-between-the-lines” details that reveal the most important aspects of the culture. The main question being pursued throughout the plot is “what makes humans different from other life?” To achieve this, I will have to build the culture including their mythology of creation, how they perceive life and death, what is sacred, what is secular, and other details. These details will be carefully written into the subtext of the piece in a style which resembles that of ancient literature with careful consideration to structure and tone. Additionally, I will work on other more tangible details such as a written language and unique art style to make the presentation of the story more immersive.

Goal

I have always been interested in writing stories but I have never finished one before. Since January of this year, I have been writing bits and pieces of small stories and customs for a culture of my own imagination. With this capstone, I will have the chance to synthesize all of these bits and pieces into a single polished piece. Though I may continue to write stories such as this after leaving TSAS, I will have had the necessary experience of completing a long-term writing project before entering college.
